The library will be closed on Saturday, May 25.

Over Memorial Day weekend, this and all C/W MARS network member libraries will migrate to a new computer system. As a result, access to the catalog and your account, as well as your ability to place Holds, will be limited or may not work at all.

If you have a Wish List or Reading History, save it before 5 p.m. on Friday, May 25. It will not carry over to the new system!

Strollin’ and Rollin’ around Bolton

The Library is pleased and honored to have been included in a new promotion by the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area and the Bolton Historical Society. Called “Strollin’ and Rollin’,” the program puts a spotlight on several area towns and their notable attractions. The program encourages visitors to walk (stroll) or bike (roll) around the highlighted towns and learn more about each as part of National Preservation Month (May). 2012′s towns are Bolton, Lancaster, and Clinton.

Stop by the Library and pick up a brochure, or print one from http://www.freedomsway.org/projects/strollin.html Then explore the Whitcomb Inn and Phillips Conservation Area, Lime Kiln and Quarry Conservation Area, Old South Burying Ground, Bolton Public Library, Wilder Mansion, and Nashoba Valley Winery. The folks at Freedom’s Way encourage participants to take and send back photos from their adventures!

New library catalog is coming

Over Memorial Day weekend, the C/W MARS network, of which the Bolton Public Library is a member, will change its online catalog and circulation systems. Preparation for the migration will entail some changes during the month of May.

Wish lists and reading histories will not migrate to the new system. If you have a wish list or reading history, print or export it soon (suggested deadline for this is May 4).
During the month of May, our ability to catalog new materials will be limited. Expect delays in getting new releases on the shelves.
May 4-28: items will still be available from other libraries in Central and Western Massachusetts, but we won’t be able to obtain materials from outside the C/W MARS network.
May 25 (6 p.m.) until May 28: the C/W MARS catalog and all personal accounts will be unavailable.
May 26: the library will be closed.
May 29: the library reopens with its new computer system (Evergreen)!
May 29: New login procedure for your account: Username is your library card number, Password is your full surname. (Old passwords won’t work.)
May 29 and going forward: Library cards are required for checkout. Drivers’ licenses and other IDs will not be accepted.

More information will soon be available on this site.

The new system features easier login, a friendlier interface, improved search tools, holds management options, list creation, and more. We’re looking forward to using it and hope you are too. Please contact us with any questions or concerns about the transition.

May 23 is Senior Appreciation Day at the Library!

The theme of the townwide appreciation of senior citizens is “Never Too Old to Play.” Seniors are invited to the library on Wednesday, May 23 from 1-3 p.m. Refreshments will be served, and we’ll play a few rousing rounds of Jeopardy-style trivia complete with prizes, all sponsored by the Friends of the Library!

On our recent survey, people who use the Children’s Room requested more seating. At the same time, many commented that the model of the Whitney sisters’ house might be too fragile to stay in a room designed for active young people.

Just in this week: a new loveseat, courtesy of the Friends of the Library. The model Whitney house is currently being refurbished, and will return in a new location outside the Children’s Room.

Learn about Town Meeting

Unfamiliar with Town Meeting practices and terminology? Need to brush up on rules of order? Join us for an information session on Thursday, May 3 starting at 7 p.m.

Participants will learn how Bolton Town Meeting works: practices and procedures, the voting process, who can speak, etc. Town Moderator Jim Anker will give a brief overview of town meeting followed by discussion and questions from the audience. Please attend to learn more about our town meeting and ask any questions you may have.

Energy Conservation Kit available to borrow

Thanks to the generosity of Sustainable Life Solutions, the Library is offering the loan of a home energy conservation kit. The kit includes a Kill-A-Watt meter, which will help users determine power usage of various appliances and devices. Also included are two booklets: Energy: Use Less, Save More by Clift and Cuthbert, and Low Carbon Diet by Gershon. Save energy and money! The Kit is available on a 3-week loan.

Snapshot Day results

A big thank you to all who participated in Snapshot Day on Tuesday, April 10. Bolton Public Library was one of over 150 libraries that participated. In doing this, we helped the MA Board of Library Commissioners to take a ‘picture’ of a day in the life of the Commonwealth’s public libraries.

Some highlights: 181 people visited the library on 4/10. 34 filled out questionnaires, and 22 of those included comments. Here are some of our favorites:

The library has changed dramatically since I moved to town, from being open so few hours that I had to take my 3-year-old son to Hudson (Library) to being a greatly expanded, vital part of the community. My family visits several times a week. Even more, during the last few months the entire system seems more efficient. Ordering items from other libraries is now so much faster.
We love our Bolton Library. It is the place where we attend programs of interest, enjoy our lovely building, and the super-helpful and pleasant staff.
We love the class (Rhythm Reads, a music program for toddlers)! We love dancing and taking books home.
Wonderful children’s programs.
I love this library! Great selection of books, audio CDs, and programs for kids. I also work here at least 1 day a week–nice and quiet.
Books are so expensive that I constantly borrow from the library to save money.
I came here to work on my assignment for a class I’m taking for my Master’s degree. In recent years I’ve come here beacuse I was working form home and the library is a great place to focus on my work!
New digital items are a big plus.
(Staff) are super helpful each time we visit.
Good selection of books and movies for adults.
This is the best library I have ever had the pleasure of visiting! Thank you.

Candidates’ Night is April 30

On Monday, April 30 from 7-9 p.m. the candidates in Bolton’s contested races will participate in Candidates’ Night, an informational forum. Town Moderator Jim Anker will preside.

This year’s contested races are for Board of Selectmen (Connie Benjamin, Larry Delaney) and Planning Board (Neil Darcy, Jonathan Keep).

Candidates’ Night is hosted by Friends of the Bolton Public Library. Location is Davis Hall (adjacent to the First Parish Church on Main St. near Town Hall).
